If you can answer “No” to the above three questions (and you’re not a Dane), consider yourself an Expat!
In other words:
- An Expat lives in Denmark. Most work or study here, and some bring spouses and children;
- An Expat is typically a highly qualified or skilled worker, who has been invited to Denmark by an international or Danish company to carry out a specific job or function. Also, many Expats are European citizens, moving within the European Union to work or study;
- Most Expats don’t stay for longer than 3-5 years. In fact, one of Denmark’s major challenges is to get highly qualified labour, and their families, to stay for longer!
To learn more about Expats and the Expat community in Denmark, check out the Statistics, or browse through our Expat profiles to learn about who they are, why they came to Denmark, and what makes them stay. We have also gathered a list of the many Expat Clubs & Networks where specific nationalities or internationals meet socially and professionally.

The campaign motive
The Expat Community in Denmark is, and continues to be, an increasingly essential part of Denmark’s future economic and social growth and development. Danes must recognise the need for Expats (regardless of origin), and how we differ as a community from many other foreigners in Denmark. In turn, the Expat community – although broad and varied – can benefit from defining itself and its needs better, publicly, and clearly.
With “We are not tourists”, we hope to increase the public’s awareness of the Expat community, and to help consolidate the community itself. Help us by spreading the word!
